CII R01 Past Papers: Do They Exist, and What to Use Instead
The CII doesn't release R01 past papers. Here's what's actually available — the CII study text, specimen questions and independent question banks — and how to use them.

If you've searched for "R01 past papers", you've probably found nothing. That's because the CII doesn't release past exam papers for any of its units, including R01.
This is different from some professional qualifications where working through old papers is a standard revision method. With CII exams, you need to use other materials to practise. The good news is there are several options — and a well-designed question bank is arguably more useful than past papers would be anyway.
📋 What's Available
- CII study text: included with your exam entry, contains specimen questions per learning outcome
- RevisionMate: CII's own online revision tool (additional cost)
- Independent question banks: exam-style questions from providers like ExamDen

On ExamDen.uk, every question comes with a clear explanation linked to the relevant learning outcome
Why the CII Doesn't Release Past Papers
The CII uses on-demand exams for R01–R05. Because candidates can book almost any day, the exam draws from a live question bank. Releasing past papers would risk exposing questions that are still in use.
This is standard practice for on-demand professional exams. LIBF does the same with CeMAP, and most other on-demand certification bodies follow the same approach.
What the CII Does Provide
1. The study text (included with your exam entry)
When you buy R01 enrolment, you get the official CII study text. It covers every learning outcome and includes specimen questions throughout. These give you a sense of the question style and difficulty, but there aren't enough of them for full exam simulation.
2. RevisionMate (additional cost)
CII's own online revision tool offers additional practice questions and progress tracking. It's a useful supplement to the study text, particularly for testing yourself on specific learning outcomes.
Why Mock Exams Are More Useful Than Past Papers
Even if R01 past papers existed, they wouldn't necessarily be the best preparation tool. Here's why:
Past papers test last year's syllabus
The R01 syllabus is updated regularly. The 2026/27 syllabus covers current FCA rules, FSCS limits and legislation. A past paper from two years ago might test rules that have since changed — FSCS limits, for example, are periodically updated.
Past papers have a fixed question set
If you work through a past paper, you see those specific questions once. A question bank gives you hundreds of questions, lets you target specific learning outcomes, and lets you take multiple timed mocks without repeating questions.
Mock exams show you where you're weak
A well-designed mock doesn't just score you — it tells you which learning outcomes you need to work on. This is far more useful for targeted revision than a past paper that just shows right and wrong answers.

On ExamDen.uk, a mock result shows which learning outcomes are below the 65% line, so you revise those instead of the whole study text
How to Build a Practice Plan Without Past Papers
Phase 1: Learn the material
Study each learning outcome using the CII study text. Answer the specimen questions as you go — don't save all practice for the end.
Phase 2: Learning-outcome-by-learning-outcome practice
Once you've covered all 11 learning outcomes, practise questions by topic. This is where you'll discover which areas you're strong on and which need more work. Pay particular attention to LO5 (29 questions), LO6 (9 questions, 5 multiple-response) and LO7 (13 questions, 8 multiple-response).

On ExamDen.uk, practise by learning outcome to find your weak spots before you take a full mock
Phase 3: Timed mocks
Take at least 2–3 full timed mocks before sitting the real exam: 100 questions in 2 hours, including multiple-response questions. If you're consistently scoring 70–75%, you're ready. If you're below 65%, go back to targeted practice on your weak learning outcomes.

On ExamDen.uk, timed mocks use the same question count, time limit and pass mark as the real exam
What About "R01 Past Papers" You Find Online?
Be cautious. Any material labelled "R01 past papers" from third-party websites is likely:
- Unofficial — not from the CII, with no guarantee of accuracy
- Outdated — based on an older syllabus with different rules, limits and legislation
- Incomplete — may not include multiple-response questions, which make up 13% of the real exam
If you use any third-party practice material, check that it matches the current 2026/27 syllabus and includes multiple-response questions in LO6 and LO7.
